As I don't buy an apple when I don't need it I have a Logitech Crayon instead of an Apple Pencil. If you put a pencil in the inner slot, the lid will not close completely. There is typical stencil rubber on the outside, so I use that to hold the pen. If I had known it wouldn't fit a pencil I would have bought it without the reserved space as the pencil "slot" makes the body wider than it needs to be. However, this is the only colorful case available for this particular iPad.
