So Far So Good: Fish and Aquatic Pets

I have had aquariums for 40 years and this is a royalty free review. I just received the item today and I set it up in 5 minutes and it worked in a 10 gallon quarantine tank that I purposely had algae develop so I could evaluate the UV content of this filter which if I decide that it will work well, eventually will work will be installed in a 4 gallon tank with nano plants that is currently being filtered with a Fluval C2 filter. Fluval C2 is a great filter, but it has 2 shortcomings that the Grech 500 will hopefully make up for. Firstly, the amount of dust/oil film on the surface that the c2 filter cannot handle. And second, because I'm running a high-intensity LED and CO2, followed by algae, which the C2 fights in the nano tank. That's the logic behind this Grech 500, it has an adjustable skimmer mounted in the intake pipe and a 5 watt UV sterilizer lamp pre-filters the water. Grech is working fine so far, but,,,, here are my concerns/suggestions for improvement. First, the fine filter gasket appears to be a bit smaller, and second, the switch for the UV lamp is on the bottom rear of the filter housing (should be on one side or the other, not the back). it leans against the wall, like most aquariums on display. And third, there is no information on the approximate lifespan of the UV lamp or where to buy replacement lamps. It would also be desirable if the UV lamp had a separate power cord so it could be connected to a separate timer. At this point every other aspect of the Greek filter seems to be clones or clones similar to Aquaclear's filters and seems to perform just as well or even better. I will update this post in 3 months after it is actually fully used. *** 1/19/18 update filter has been working for 4 months and I am so impressed with its performance that I have replaced it with my 4 gallon nano plant tank replacing the Fluval C2 filter. I only use the UV lamp for about 1 hour a week and it maintains a crystal clear capacity even with CO2 and lots of bright LED light. very impressed, very calm.
