These gel pens are very smooth and bright. It is very similar in consistency to Faber Castell Gelatos and can be used in a similar way. They are very smooth, ideal for applying large areas of paint quickly, but not at all suitable for painting details or small areas. However, you can use them with a brush and water for finer work. The colored pencils are water soluble. Applying a layer of pigment and then diluting it with water gives a translucent watercolor effect. You can then add more layers to get a richer and more vibrant color if you want. You can also mix colors by layering them and rinsing them off with water, or by mixing them on a palette. Once the paint is dry, you can write or draw on it with colored pencils, wax crayons, watercolor pencils, gel pens, etc. I find them very versatile and fun, and love the variety of colors in this set. I would not recommend these for younger children unless they are very well cared for as they have the consistency of lipstick as someone commented above. The paint can easily get on clothes, skin, walls, furniture, unfortunate animals, etc. But they will be a great delight for older teenagers and adult painters and dyers.
