Good solid asshole.

**Updated 6/1/21** I have used the Muddler several times since receiving it. I would say mineral oil is a necessary step. For the time being, after preparing a drink, quickly rinse the business end and wipe it with a bar towel. No sign of a split. Still looks the same as in the photo I've attached. Excellent quality if you are willing to do a little prep before first use. OP. It appears to be a reliable, well-made bungler. I replaced the plunger that came with it, it was painted and felt cheap. I didn't want a finish to chip away in my cocktail. This new pestle feels good in the hand, with a smooth, even cut and texture. This is untreated wood, so it needs to be treated with mineral oil, just like a butcher's block with an end grind, or any "bare" wooden handle. I filled a shaker with a pint of edible mineral oil and steeped the plunger for a couple/several hours, then inverted to steep the remainder of the exposed portion overnight. (Part of the pestle was sticking out so you could find a bigger jar to get it all at once). You can see in my photo this is right after removing it from the oil and wiping off any excess oil. I let it acclimate during the day and wipe off excess oil before it goes in the box or before I use it. Haven't used it yet but I'm sure it will solve the disconnection issue that other reviewers had. . Her photos show that her muddler is pale and bone dry, with cracks. It's fair to expect this product not to be oiled upon receipt, but I wouldn't compromise on its quality. It just comes with experience. You can see that mine absorbed the oil well and turned a nice golden honey color. Once the oil and wood have acclimated, they should be well sealed for endless tangle-free cocktails. (And oil getting into your drink isn't an issue given mineral oil's hydrophobic nature, just like a butcher block or cutting board)
