Review on Park Tool Dial Indicator Kit by Sam Bhushan

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Useful dial that really helps to set up bike disc brake rotors!

Most new bikes over $400 in the US have disc brakes unless designed for road racing. And the rotors on these wheels can slow you down and create drag if they aren't true up to 1/2 millimeter (500 microns) on some calipers. That's where this doo-dad dial comes in, which allows you (if you have a rotor tuning fork) to fully tune the rotor (or at least up to 1/100th of a millimeter (that's 10 microns)). You can adjust it to fit most straightening blocks, but it works best in combination with the Park Tool DT-3 Rotor Straightening Gauge and Park Tool TS-2.2, TS-2, or TS-4 straightening blocks. This is a newer DT-3i. 2 is improved over the old DT-3i dial with a longer end cap that doesn't get stuck in some of the rotor holes and the use of a shim set to better keep the end cap flat against the rotor. It has the same accuracy as the DT-3i and once you have read the instructions and placed it on an alignment stand you can easily and accurately align the rotors. I check the rotors on both of my mountain bikes about every month or when I hear rubbing and so far the DT-3 and this DT-3i.2 have allowed me to run my rotors with no problems. Unlike the much more expensive TS-2Di Spinning Wheel Set, which is used for straightening wheels (or making new wheels) and isn't really useful, this DT-3i.2 Spinning Wheel is actually useful and used a lot. I highly recommend it to advanced home mechanics and workshop mechanics. Five stars in my book.

Pros
  • Now includes an extended barrel tip large enough to work around cavities in most rotors.
Cons
  • Some problems.
