I had a bad dog smell in my bagless Bissell. And it just didn't stop. year of the stink. I scattered these beads on the carpet, vacuumed and left. And "doesn't smell like a dog" anymore. Other reviews were quite critical of the pearl smell, but I like it. Some pine scent. Not the prettiest smell I've ever smelled, but way better than "sour dog". Very easy to use. My vacuum is a clear plastic "remove chamber to clean" type vacuum and the balls sat happily. I emptied the chamber, sucked up another batch of pearls - and left them for a month. The problem seems to have gone away, and the beads sat safely in the chamber - they were thrown away. So. That worked for me.
