I'm new to turntables. Grew up listening to them in the 80's but switched to CDs as soon as they were invented. I am currently checking this format. I considered different options and after some research settled on Audio Technica and Rega. The Rega P1, Rega P2 sound slightly better than the Audio Technica LP120, but the Rega wasn't worth the higher price. While I'm not a DJ the AT LP120's aesthetic grew for me and with the added features/lights it felt like I was getting more bang for my buck and the Regas just seemed easy. I'm sure pure audiophiles will disagree with my assessment of Rega. But I'm just a casual listener and don't want to spend too much money on TT. Then I found the LP120X, a newer updated version of the LP120. Luckily my LP120 was still in the return window. There aren't as many reviews for the LP120X as there are thousands of reviews for the LP120, so I took a chance. Advantages or improvements of 120X over 120:1. better pen. Highs are brighter and clearer. Overall it just sounds better than the LP120. I will not go into all the technical aspects of the phono/line output. I have a separate preamp and amp.2. The drive/motor is completely silent compared to the loud noise of the 120. I had to put my ear to the 120X and still can't hear the engine. It's so good.3. RCA jacks so you can upgrade your cables.4. Removable modeling light. While some people prefer the LP120's built-in pop-up light, I like the LP120X's detachable light because it allows for rotation. I have the album art next to the TT and the light is on when listening to music in a darkened room. It illuminates the artwork. Neutral/Equal Scores: 1st prize (I have an LP120 on sale).2nd prize. Both are made with a lot of plastic.3. Both are available in black or silver. I returned the silver LP120 and kept the LP120X. Although both are nice and suit my system. Black is a bit more modern. Disadvantages: 1. Loss of height adjustment on the tonearm (I didn't care).2. recoil loss (didn't care). It's been less than a week but I'm very satisfied. I will update the review if anything changes. Update: June 2019: More than a month has passed. I'm still happy with TT. I use at least 1 hour a day. Some notes: 1. This is a fully manual control. So if you fall asleep while listening, it keeps spinning. But automatic TTs are not of such high quality and break down more.2. Adding an acrylic pool mat made it more visually interesting as the strobe light goes through the mat. Especially at night.3. I bought a vinyl lint roller. Works better than brushes to remove dust from vinyl records.4. I'm not interested in converting my vinyl records to digital, so haven't tried it yet. Update July 2019: About 2 months have passed. I still enjoy TT daily. So far no problems. However, I highly recommend it. I've already collected a few entries. We go to local vinyl stores, thrift stores and shop at Revain. Update August 2019: 3 months now. Still in effect. No problem, still recommended, September. 4 months: still holding up. No problem. Another recommendation: This is a great TT period. I think it's a great way to dive into the hobby and see if you have bat ears and can tell it apart from the more expensive TT and if you should upgrade. For me it is perfect for my needs. Although I can afford a much more expensive TT, I don't need to upgrade. Update Dec 2019: Still working great. No questions.
