The main downside is that the wrist isn't waterproof at all. For a normal day in the cold, very warm and excellent mittens. Easy to dress my 3 year old and sometimes easy to dress my 1 year old. I bought these for my 3 year old to wear to forest school when he plays in the mud and creek in the cold. They weren't waterproof, just water repellent. And I realized that they have to go up the arm so water or dirt doesn't get through the wrist. Even when tucked into an Oaki raincoat, they still got wet on the inside.
