The phone must be placed on it in exactly the right place to charge.
I spend a lot of time trying to position my phone in the right place, but when I come back later, it has stopped charging because for some reason it has moved a millimeter away from the charging station. It's also not very magnetic, at least on my iPhone SE (2020). There are other chargers that I think work better for about the same price.
