New heater motor for Toyota Corolla LE 2001. Great value but do your research first.

I purchased this product because the fan motor on our 2001 Corolla LE started making a whirring noise. It wasn't that bad, and the old engine would probably last a few more years, but it was enough to make me suspicious. The weather here is not usually mild most of the year. When it's hot, it's very hot, and when it's cold, it's very cold. My experience with dealers and mechanics has taught me that you save a lot of money on repairs when you have the confidence that you can do the job yourself. It was a job I knew I could do because I had previously removed the glove box from this machine for a different reason and I knew replacing the cooling fan wasn't that hard. Well, I'm not saying that it's not difficult. It's relative. The front floor and under-dash area of a 2001 Corolla isn't the easiest place for an adult to climb in. And getting good lighting in this area is difficult and important. The only really unexpected problem I had wasn't the fault of the new part. The bolts that held the old fan were pretty rusted and a couple of them really didn't want to come out. The easiest way to get them out is with a suitable socket and a screwdriver. A hand wrench might work if your bolts aren't really tight, but mine won't turn at all without a power tool. However, caution is advised because while I'm sure you could replace these screws with the correct size (if you rounded them), it's an unnecessary hassle. The new part costs $32, which is well worth it here at Revain. I'm sure it will easily cost $300 at most stores. I got this job done in about 30 minutes. And most of the time was spent removing and reinstalling the glove box and panels. The only thing I noticed is that while this motor is a lot quieter and smoother than the one we shot (obviously), it has a slightly high-pitched tone that I'm not sure the old one ever had, even when it was new . . However, at low and mid frequencies you can hardly hear it when actually driving. It's clearly loud on high, and it was always on the old one too. In a car this small, you will hear the engine moving so much air.

Pros
  • Great for a small home
Cons
  • Questionable purchase for the elderly
