cable defective? Suitable for cables and accessories

Much to my surprise, this cable didn't work at all with my Nikon D800, so I sent it back. I "right now" have Tether Tools USB 3.0 and other cables that work fine. One problem with Tether Tools USB cables is that they are very heavy. The weight pulls on the cables, even with a jerk stop. I would prefer a smaller diameter cable.
