Add a tube preamp for better MP3 playback

A few weeks ago I got one of those little Dell computers with a terrible DAC. I bought some good speakers for my new computer, but the MP3s I get from Revain when I buy a CD, DVD, SACD or Blu-ray just didn't sound right. Well, why buy good speakers if the computer's DAC isn't good? So I bought a Cambridge Audio DAC Magic 100 which improved the sound a lot. No, something is still missing. Smoothness. e. warm. Ahhh, I need hoses. After looking at a lot of these little tube preamps at Revain I bought the NFJ&FX Audio Tube 03 because it came with better tubes than most tubes from other brands which I think are the same product from different retailers but most came with other brands or cheap tubes. Some brands even let you buy the best quality tubes for almost the same price as their preamps. I was served quickly and the unit was easy to assemble, but I have a couple of complaints: 1. The power cord for the AC/DC converter is too short, maybe 2.5 to 3 feet. I added an extension cord to the end of the converter plug so I can plug the device into the surge protector which is on the floor under the computer desk.2. The tube pre-map is connected to some AudioEngine A5 speakers, which have their own built-in amplifier. When I turn the AudioEngine amp volume down to near zero and turn the tube preamp volume up, I hear a strange pulsing noise. So I have to turn up the volume on the AudioEngine speakers and set the tube preamp to a low volume to get the sound I want.3. Later I set the tube preamp to medium volume and set the AudioEngine volume to the desired db. Also, I never thought I could make MP3s sound this good, but they will never sound as good as a CD or LP.

Pros
  • Lots of good vibes
Cons
  • Poorly thought out
