There are outlets that stay on and some outlets that are smart outlets. When the smart plugs are off and your hearing is good enough it makes that really annoying high pitched sound, if I weren't wearing earplugs to sleep I'd return them in a heartbeat. I bought this so I could turn off any selective devices that put out too much light in the dark and then turn on and make that noise? The back is at least flat so I could mount it to the wall with the command strips. Edit: That high-pitched tone doesn't just start when smart plugs are off. It seems to be like this all the time, so I strongly recommend that if you have good hearing and can hear high frequencies, stay away from this product. It's too late for me to go back and I'll cut my losses and go back to an old fashioned power strip.
