Trim the wick evenly and adjust the flame with the dial mechanism, it should burn fairly evenly with no smoke, soot or splatter. Oil candles with a round wick and a bare, candle-sized flame must be trimmed to the level of the wick holder or they will smoke and splatter like crazy!
