Two of these were purchased in April 2013. Brand new, they were filled with a strong chemical smell. I could reasonably expect that. So I soaked them in white vinegar as some suggested, it didn't seem to make much of a difference. Soaked in baking soda, no noticeable difference either. I washed them many times until the chemical smell seemed to go away a bit. Have used these blankets every winter since 2013. They were taken out yesterday and washed again in the coming cold months. To my surprise, the chemical smell hasn't diminished in four years. If anything, washing only seemed to restore the chemical smell to its original strength. My friends, there is NO way to get rid of the chemical smell in these blankets. If you think you can, you are wrong. I think I could keep them for twenty years and give you the same bill. I wish I had spent a lot more money on virgin wool blankets that have NOT been permanently treated with a super powerful Chinese insecticide. how much is a few yards of real wool and i think i will find someone on cr4igslist with a spinning wheel and a loom. If this experience has taught me anything, it is that such effort and expense is preferable to living with constant insect bombs.
