tank saved! Despite testing and regular water changes and the care that a few amateurs a year can provide, one morning something bothered our fish. They all gasped at the top of the tank when I got up. I did a quick water change (luckily we had enough water already dechlorinated and ready to use) and put in a poly filter. The fish recovered and we didn't lose any of them. The pad absorbed something, not quite sure what, despite the color coding. Great product, we have been working hard to get our aquarium healthy for our tropical fish and extinction would be devastating for everyone especially the fish! We will stock them and also plan to use them in a DIY protein skimmer project. Hopefully this will also help if we have to take long trips and skip water changes. Got this after seeing a Rachel O'Leary video (and also Aquarium Coop) and I'm glad I tried it.
