Review on BILLY Footwear WDR Wide High-Top Classic (Little Kid/Big Kid) by Calvin Reynolds

Suitable for SMO

My 4.5 year old daughter with trisomy 21 wears SMO braces. She has been wearing the shoes for about a week and these shoes go well with her suspenders. The photos show a small gap between the braces and the side of the shoe. When supporting my daughter's foot, the brace expands and that space disappears. I measured her foot and ordered size 9. (I had to measure her foot with a splint.) The corset is tight but still comfortable. However, it won't last long with her. A half size larger would be ideal, but there are no half sizes with this BILLY model. Before classes start in the fall I will buy another pair and order a size 10. These shoes have two insoles. One can be removed. First I tried to put on shoes with both insoles but they were too tight and didn't close completely. After removing the first insole, I was able to close the zipper. If the first insole was not removable, the shoe would not work with your braces. If you have a young child with SMO, you know that putting on socks, then braces, and then shoes can take time. Then, when your child takes off their shoes, you have a good five minutes to put them back on. These BILLY zip-up shoes really speed up the process. I'm also happy that they look like normal shoes and that BILLY shoes come in different models. Shoes designed to be worn over orthopedic insoles often look clunky, medical-grade and awkward. While my daughter is still young enough to not really care about being stylish, that will likely change with time. If you have older children who wear braces, the design, print, and style are beneficial.
