Ideal for a reporter.

As a newspaper reporter, I have to attend many county government meetings. I also have to interview people. Problem: I'm a bad writer. Solution: this voice recorder. This is an excellent recorder that works well for general purpose recording. It is easy to use and effectively reproduces the subject's speech. It is compact, fits easily in your pocket and you can still see that it is well made. However, I had to learn a few things over time. After trying many AAA batteries, I found that if I didn't want a two-hour recording of myself driving, talking, and eating with the recorder in my pocket, I had to turn the recorder off on purpose. Not only does this eat up the battery, when you do it's a bit annoying to have to go back and make sure the recording isn't what I need. After all, I had several long notes of meetings. I also found out that this recorder needs a good case otherwise the sound comes out of a "black hole" and you feel like an idiot if your pants run out. Yes, it started playing when I had it in my pocket and I couldn't figure out what was going on. Turn off the recorder again! But these are MY problems, not a voice recorder. He is excellent at his job. Oh, and I've only used alkaline batteries so far, and it's got enough power from a good quality AAA alkaline battery to record probably a dozen hours of audio. I would recommend this recorder to anyone who needs to record someone's speech, be it a college professor or a politician. Pros: + Runs on AAA batteries, so easy to feed. + Records audio accurately. + The speaker playback volume is excellent, and a simple pair of headphones will keep you from bothering those around you. + Good battery life with alkaline batteries. + Many available accessories. The handset, Olympus part number TP-8, is particularly useful when you need to conduct phone interviews. Cons - You REALLY need to read the manual. It turns off when you press the button to turn it back on! - The case is not included, so you need to find a good quality case. A compact digital camera case should work well and not be expensive.

Pros
  • Durable test results
Cons
  • You could choose a newer model
