Granules work well when the air in your home is damp. My basement gets water every now and then when it rains continuously (i.e. 24-48 hours). After siphoning off the water (wet/dry) I just put a few pellets in containers and the water soaks in for a few days. You simply take the pellet holder out of the container and pour the liquid into the toilet bowl. Then add a few more grains for the next contact with excess water. The water is at the bottom of the tank and the pellets are in the pellet holder that you pull out; So if you still have the pellets in the holder, you obviously aren't going to flush them down the toilet, just the liquid.
