Good printer for the money

Bought two of these. Printer 1 ran out of black ink before a replacement arrived. I figured I would just use a cartridge to print from a printer that hasn't been opened yet 2. No luck. Somehow they encode the supplied cartridges and refuse to work on the printer 1. Who sits down and invents this nonsense?
