Who came up with this?: Clothespin Puzzle

I bought this set as a gift for my 16 month old nephew. I opened it up for inspection on arrival and the first thing that caught my eye was one of the puzzle pieces depicting a single engine propeller plane called a 'fighter plane' - why not just 'plane' - a toddler doesn't have to know there's such things as fighters - they'll find out soon enough. Same goes for the letter 'W' which was used to mean 'water gun' - why add the word 'pistol' - they are very familiar with the term 'water' which should have been more than enough. I think I bought expensive wood for my fireplace.
