Purchased for mountain biking and use with inner shorts. I wear size 36 and it fits me better. There is still plenty of elastic stretch left, not too tight and not too loose. The black stripe across the butt is a spandex-like material that stretches a lot to keep the plumbing from tearing while cycling. The rest of the shorts are made from a very light softshell material that seems to offer a good compromise between abrasion resistance and lightness/breathability. I haven't found a use for zip pockets, but maybe you will. I don't like it when something hits my thighs while riding a bike. I chose these because I liked the way the zippers were sewn in and not fused with fabric tape. I've seen a few reviews of other similar shorts where the zippers unravel after a few washes, so the sewn-in zippers tricked me into that. Now that I ride a lot more with my son I need to get another pair. Has lasted up to 3 washes and rides so far, will definitely update if I have long term issues.
