I was concerned based on reviews about toxic smell etc. When I received the mattress the instructions said it would have a strong odor due to the vacuum packaging. You were right. It was a really horrible, overpowering smell that permeated the whole room. I took it out of the mattress cover and aired it in an unoccupied room. Every day I came and sniffed the mattress to make sure the smell was gone and it really is. After about 5 days I put the covers back on, pressed my face against the mattress and took a deep breath, but there was no smell at all. My baby used to wake up after 10-30 minutes in the crib. I guess her mattress was too hard. Now she sleeps much better. The purchase was worth it.
