Review on Fisher-Price Infant Toy Trio: Sort, Snap & Spin Set by Nick Gathings

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Great toy set that grows with your baby

The Fisher-Price Baby Toy Trio makes a great gift for toddlers aged 2+. This plastic toy trio consists of a breakable caterpillar, shape sorting bucket and five rotating ones Cone. Everything is very colorful and big enough for little hands. I have not identified anything as a choking hazard. Durability appears to be good and with one exception the toys will withstand abuse from small children. This is premium Fisher Price quality at an affordable price. The sorting bucket has a lid that allows children to sort 5 different shapes: circles, triangles, squares, crosses and stars. Each piece is a different color and comes double (so you get 10 pieces). The fit is well thought out and specific so kids can't just fit everything through a square hole. Babies from 6-9 months can handle the details and then you can work on sorting colors and shapes in the 12-24 month range. Tops come in 5 different colors and are best suited for children aged 18-24 months. Again, a 6 month old can handle the skittles, but it will take time for baby to develop the finger strength and dexterity to spin the skittles on top of each other. At the bottom of each cone is a blunt plastic "needle". It's deep inside the cone and isn't sharp or dangerous at all. However, the needle ideally fits into the top of another cone. The tips of the cones are recessed inward, allowing the blunt plastic needle to actually be twisted with minimal friction. An adult can keep the skittles spinning for longer than a minute, maybe even about two minutes. To date I have been most impressed with these spinning skittles and I think parents will even enjoy trying to keep them spinning for long periods of time to impress their little ones. The weakest link in this bundle is probably the caterpillar toy. , but good anyway. The caterpillar consists of 6 segments that snap into place with a plastic ball. The front part and the purple part don't really offer a child a level of interactivity. The rear, however, has a nice twisty component that clicks like a ratchet when you turn it. There is a green figure with spinning fins. There is a part with a clear plastic cover so the child can see the 3 little balls rattling around. And there's another green detail that includes a permanently embedded sphere that spins around a fixed axis. Of the 6 piece caterpillar, I think the tail piece might be the most fun for kids over 9 months. Many babies by the age of 12 to 15 months should be able to turn their tails on their own. A 6 month old baby will enjoy a three ball rattle. My only criticism of the track is the collapsing articulations. The joints are too hard for babies under 30 months to fall apart. But after only a month of use, they are quite loose, and the caterpillar fragments are too easy to separate, they can even fall apart if a child picks up a whole 6-piece caterpillar by the head. It's still not a bad toy, but it's the only piece in the whole package that lacks durability for toddlers. Overall, this is a great gift set for little ones. I recommend it as a gift for the birth of a child or in the first 9 months of a child's life. So they can use it for a few years as they get better at seeing colors, sorting shapes, and learning how to rotate cones.
