Probably not sensitive enough

I have a GMC 2500HD Duramax that I think has a head gasket leak. Bought this kit along with diesel oil. As a double function check, I put the exhaust from the exhaust pipe through the tester. The liquid changed color for a long time. Can't figure out how it will work well enough to detect combustion products in the coolant surge tank.
