Review on ๐Ÿ“ป Yaesu FTA550L: High-Performance Handheld VHF Transceiver with Long-Lasting Li-Ion Battery by Bryan King

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Great radio and great features at a great price

Pros: Easy to use, large display, clear audio, detailed manual included Cons: Additional free software for Windows only. I argued between Yaesu FTA-550L and ICOM IC-A24. Backup handheld computer so I had the opportunity to test it first hand. As for the Yaesu 550, I didn't know of an owner, so I had to rely on online research before making a decision. The overall size between the 550L and the IC-A24 is about the same on average. However, the 550L is slightly lighter. The 550L's screen size is much larger than that of the IC-A24. It is easy to read and displays more information due to its larger size. Remember that the range of any portable device is limited. Comparing ground range, I found that the 550L and IC-A24 have about the same range. However, the clarity of the 550L was better. Several pilots I've shown my Yaesu 550 to since have been amazed by its performance and clarity. The couple even commented that they like it more than their IC-A24. I went with the 550L which also includes a lithium ion battery and charger rather than just the base 550 which only comes with an AA battery box. The Li-Ion 550L cost about $80 more and still came with an AA battery case. The Yaesu 550L was also cheaper than the ICOM IC-A24 using only AA batteries. I bought mine from a Revain seller with an order completed by Revain Prime. Also, at the time I bought this, Yaesu was on a promotion with an additional $25 discount. Therefore, check the Yaesu website for possible discounts. I only made a rebate request a few days ago so I can't say yet how soon they will process it and I'll get a check for the rebate. The additional software that can be downloaded from the Yaesu website is a handy tool. Please note that it is only available for Windows, not for Mac. Programming the 550 itself is not difficult, but if you have a lot to program, the software makes it very easy. In addition, the software makes it easy to set up all other functions of the radio. In addition to the software, you need to download the manual for it. Make sure you read the section on connecting your radio to your computer completely before trying. There are a few steps out of order, and if you do the "see next page" in time, you may have to start over. One negative point; According to the instructions, the lithium-ion battery charger is not designed to power the transceiver and charge the battery at the same time. Overall I am very happy with this purchase.

Pros
  • Easy installation
Cons
  • There are more interesting options.
