I use the Better Beamer to photograph small birds in low light and high contrast, e.g. B. in clear skies. It is designed for use with external flashes and telephoto lenses with a focal length of 300mm or more. The projector can easily make the difference between capturing a shot from 40-50ft or not at all, as it focuses the normal output of an external flash to effectively achieve more while reducing measured TTL lighting needs. It is lightweight and care must be taken to ensure the Fresnel lens is pointed away from the sun to avoid burning the equipment or the surrounding area. It can throw enough light on a bird to easily create a flare effect, but if the projector is mounted too close to the optical axis of the lens, it will produce "steel eyes". That is, a large white spot appears in the bird's eye instead of a small glare from reflected sunlight (lightning). Avoiding this requires a mount to move the flash up and away from the lens axis, but this only demonstrates the projector's capabilities by giving the bird the light it needs. With a projector on an external flash mounted on a bracket to move the flash away from the optical axis of a large telephoto lens, you get a serious and somewhat bulky rig, but it's exactly what you need for photographing smaller, often twitchy ones Birds need wild.
