I tried very hard to get it working. My model is Janome/New Home 445 and admittedly an old machine but it works well and works great with Schmetz brand universal needles. I've tried several different needles, different sizes, different fabrics, adjusted the tension, but each time my thread hasn't caught or tangled or jammed the machine. I switched back to the needles I was using before, exactly the same size, and the machine continued sewing with no problem, so it was clearly a problem with the needles and not the machine.
