The shelves are completely raw, unfinished and unfinished so be careful. I had sandpaper and still wanted to paint it, so keep that in mind. "rope" is not two long ropes that you can cut like I thought. They are actually 3 sets of pre-cut and measured "ropes" that are burn sealed at each end. Which was quite ugly and disappointing because it doesn't really give you much choice in terms of length or if you want to do something like a ladder rack with it. It's not even real rope. It's like thick knit material on the inside wrapped with some sort of rope on the outside, sticking out. You can see it in the photos I took. Some of the "ropes" weren't soldered, and when I tried to thread them through the holes in the wooden boards, I had a bit of a problem. The "knitting thread" part got through, but the "rope" part got caught on all the tiny splinters at the other end of the hole because the wood wasn't finished and the holes were pretty narrow. And it's like pulling a straw out of a paper wrapper, if that makes sense. I had to pull everything out by using a pencil to push part of the rope far enough to fish it out from the other side with tweezers. After tying each end, all I had to do was trim off the excess inner thread. The ropes are not all the same length. It doesn't look particularly pretty, but the area I'm holding it in is recessed so you can't tell for sure unless you get close anyway. But honestly, if you have the tools to cut wood and poke holes in it, you're better off just buying some 1x4s and some rope and doing it yourself. Maybe it looks better, gives you more quantity and better quality. All in all, I'm not upset about it and constantly get compliments on my little tweak. But basically it's what you would expect from another Chinese seller on Revain. Don't expect to be overwhelmed or amazed, it's no better than anything you can do yourself with a little work, but it does the job.
