Scotch Bi-Directional Fiber Tape is, by the company's own description, "heavy duty". This packaging tape is reinforced with fiberglass strands encased in a fabric tape. The tape can't be torn, that's the point, but you'll need scissors to cut it. It's 5.7 mil thick and transparent except for the fiberglass mesh, allowing graphics and barcodes to be read through. At least that's what Scotch claims, but I think I'll use clear tape to cover barcodes and addresses. Sliver is used for binding, binding and reinforcing boxes during transportation, especially for heavy contents. I intend to use it for book crates, but this tape will come in handy for any crate whose contents are so heavy that the crate could fall off the bottom when lifted or burst if dropped. Some of them were delivered in a mail bag after the contents fell apart. If you seal all the edges of the box, this sliver should prevent this problem. Reinforced rubberized paper tape will also work, but filament tape is more convenient. I compared it to shipping and packing tape and found that the filament tape sticks a little better. Scotch claims it will "stick to a variety of surfaces, including metal, plastic and fiberboard". If adhesion is an issue, you can always wrap the tape all the way around the box. Bi-directional filament tape is expensive, but probably worth the money if you're shipping or storing heavy items. This can save you the hassle of filing multiple insurance claims.
