I bought this lens because I needed the best performing glass I could get within my budget; I also needed a bit more range and IQ than the 18-55mm kit lens I got with my Nikon D80. trying it out and couldn't be happier with its performance, in fact I'm pleasantly surprised at the image quality every time I use it. It's been billed as "professional quality glass that Nikon mistakenly put in a plastic body" but I find it as strong as most modern kit lenses. It's just the right size for a small lens that fits well on cameras. like D80; The autofocus is fast and quiet. Between 35-60mm focal length, its sharpness is the same as many prime lenses. The only issue I've noticed with this lens is magenta fringes in very high contrast areas, but given the excellent performance/cost ratio I can get around that. little problem. I would recommend a good quality UV filter such as a Black & White 67mm UV (Ultraviolet) Haze Glass (2C) #010 Filter or a 67mm Digital Multilayer UV (Ultraviolet) Filter by Hoya DMC PRO1 67mm. . to protect the front element as it is quite large and located close to the front end of the lens even with the lens hood attached. By the way, if you're thinking about upgrading to a full-frame digital (FX) camera in the future, this lens will also work with this body or with most of the newer Nikon 35mm SLRs.
