We received some standard plastic doorstops as shower gifts but I didn't even bother to open them. I've seen many kids get around them just by yanking on the door hard enough and I knew they weren't worth the trouble. A friend told me about these locks and they sounded perfect so we bought them. These locks are great! You absolutely cannot tell they are installed. All our furniture looks as good as ever. When closed, the doors close fairly tightly. There is virtually no room to hook your little finger. Our daughter is now 3 years old and we have had her installed since she was 9 months old. She's never climbed into a closet we didn't want her in, and she's never pinched her fingers. We originally placed them on all of our kitchen and bathroom vanity units. Now that she's older, we just flip the little red piece and unlock the locks on cabinets that we need easy access to and that don't bother her anymore (e.g. pots and pans), while leaving the detergent cabinets locked. She'll even flip the switch and lock it again for fun. Even though she knows how locks work, she still can't hit them. I saw her try to line up the magnet and open one, but she just couldn't. Depending on how well my husband drilled the hole, you have to line it up correctly, and she doesn't have the patience or the dexterity for that. She doesn't even try to get into locked closets anymore. Speaking of drilling, please follow the instructions on the packaging! If you're not careful, you'll poke a hole in the door. My husband did a great job with all the closet doors down to the last one. I think he was a little overconfident and just stopped paying attention. Of course he drilled right through the door! A small price to pay for my daughter's safety.
