Buy the ballast that fits EXACTLY your application.

This is an amazing product when paired with the right fluorescent lighting. You need to go to the Sylvania Ballast cross reference, I won't post the link here but you can find it. toomanyamps should release it, but they have a new website in the works so maybe they will. You may find them on other lightbulb seller websites but I didn't want to post about another company so no link here. I bought 4 Sylvania Octron T8 32w bulbs from a local hardware store and installed them but they flickered (as did the old bulbs so I replaced them) with the old ballasts. I've been looking for Sylvania's ballasts and here's the deal. Sylvania quality ballasts are manufactured for very specific applications. So there are T8 Octron 32W 2 bulbs and T8 Octron 32W 3 bulbs and 4 bulbs etc. IT WILL PROBABLY BE QHE3X. QHE4X. or There is also a T8 Octron 40W 2 bulb which can be QHE2X40T8. and .well, you get the point. You must find and purchase the EXACTLY RIGHT ballast for your application. When you do that, the bulbs are brighter than the old 40Ws (I used 32), they don't flicker, they turn on instantly, they don't buzz or whine. It is very nice. And the diffuser glass on the new Octrons is so good that in a fixture where I used to look up and see two bulbs through the plastic diffuser, there's an almost constant white glow, very even, although you'll hardly notice there are two gives pears above. They promote a guarantee for large industrial users if you match the ballasts to the bulbs precisely so for the home user they will likely last a long, long time.

Pros
  • Great for a small home
Cons
  • A dubious purchase for the elderly
