shelves didn't come with assembly instructions but judging by the pictures and the pre-drilled holes it was pretty intuitive to put them together. I really liked that the big box was fully assembled as that would probably be the hardest part to get it right. The shelves themselves are strong and well sanded. Perfect for hanging or painting. I screwed the rug pieces to my top because I was afraid my cats might slip while jumping from one to the other. My biggest complaint/advice to others: DO NOT use the screws provided to attach the shelves to the wall. When you drill through a bolt, the screws are too soft and don't pull in or out as easily, so you have to use pliers to try to pull the screws back out. If the studs are not drilled, the supplied wall plugs are useless and will pull right out of the wall. In addition, the pre-drilled holes are so large that the screw heads go right through the floors. So before installing, go to a hardware store and buy real screws and washers, and when installing, make sure at least one of the screws goes straight into the stud for optimal stability.
