Keeps my food cold for 6 days in hot weather! (Also some tips on fridges.)

This fridge kept my food cold for 6 days in hot weather. I am very impressed. The weather was 85-90 degrees every day and I was worried that my food wouldn't stay cold for the 6 day trip. However, this cooler performed like a champ. On the 5th day, chunks of ice were still present. When I got home last night (Day 6) there was no real ice left, but the last one must have only recently melted because the water was still freezing. And my last meal (in ziplock bags) was still tasty and cold. I am very happy with this cooler. I used several tricks to make the ice last longer: 1) I used block ice. I found a local ice cream company that sells block ice (grocery stores don't seem to sell block ice anymore). I put three 10 lb blocks in it and they fit perfectly on the floor. Then I put my food etc in there and added some chopped ice to fill in the gaps. But the block of ice is of great importance. It takes much longer. 2) I used my fridge at home to pre-chill whatever I put in it. You can lose a lot of ice by only refrigerating hot food and drinks to begin with, so it helps a lot to only put things in the fridge that are already cold. This also means that I didn't put any new hot drinks in the fridge during the trip. So I drank non-chilled water most of the time, which isn't ideal, but it's a compromise to try and extend the life of the ice for my food as much as possible. 3) I paid attention to frequency and duration. those times when I opened the cool box. If you open the fridge and dig in every hour, the ice will melt much faster. I only opened the cooler 2-3 times a day 4) Of course, as always, I want to leave the water there as the ice melts. Don't drain the water! Store all your groceries in ziplock bags so they stay submerged and still ok. Cold water prevents the remaining ice from melting better than air.
