As a radio amateur I would love to buy my 6 year old nephew a pair of 'real' FRS radios for about the same price but I was afraid he might accidentally switch to another channel or encounter other problems, and it wouldn't be much fun. This radio is a good mix of features for a kid: - small, looks cool/real - flashlight (not very functional but fun) - doesn't stay on, just as long as you hold the button - but can do the Change channels options not too confusing and easy to change - has a privacy code - preinstalled, not configurable - fun little 'Roger' sound when you stop transmitting - compatible with full featured FRS radios - for mum and dad when You want to use them with Real FRS radio, channels are odd numbered: Little Pretenders 1 = FRS 1, private code 4 (77 Hz) Little Pretenders 2 = FRS 3, private code 4 (77 Hz) Little Pretenders 3 = FRS 6, private code acy 4 (77hz) It's good that these radios have a privacy code so they don't accept random chatter from other people on the same channel BUT it's not really personal - other people can still hear you - tell your kids So be sure to: - don't talk to strangers - don't use their full name - don't use their address, phone number, etc. Forget about 2 miles - they should have a real-world range of about 0.5 miles. Since many FRS users default to channel 1, using channel 3 on these radios may be slightly better.
