Although this is an under cabinet lamp I used it on my computer. I put it on top of the monitor so I don't have to turn on the light when using it in the bedroom. I like how I can adjust the brightness and tone of the lighting. The light control cable is long enough to place next to the keyboard so I don't have to reach for anything to turn it on or off or change settings. Even though it's USB powered, I can connect it with an adapter so I don't have to rely on a computer. The bar itself is magnetic, but not a very strong magnet to ruin your computer. I have the option to change location as I have not permanently attached it to a wall or door. If the power goes out, I can just plug it into a portable battery.
