One of the considerations when looking for a plasma torch was "non-contact pilot arc”. This feature allows the operator to start the cutting arc simply by pulling the trigger. Another variation is that, like stick welding, the operator must first strike the metal to activate the arc. Sounds like a nice feature, but I found it to cost at least $300. After much deliberation, I decided to save $300 and ditch the touchless feature. This was a concern when the machine arrived because stick welding can be both arc starting and arc restarting. Luckily I didn't find that to be a problem at all. I found that I didn't actually have to hit the metal, I just had to get close to it. In other words, it works great and I feel like I saved $300. As for the machine, it works great. I say fantastic. He does what he has to do. He cuts metal.
