Very good with some work

This is better than I expected for the price. When I first tried to play the cassette it was a bit slow and I heard a beep. I decided to open this player to see how the quality is and if the gears can be lubricated. Three screws on the side hold the back. I removed the screws and then used a feeler gauge to separate the back panel from the player. Inside, I found a piece of electrical tape was leaning against the motor belt. I cut off this tape and re-glued it to the circuit board. I also lubricated the pulleys as a precaution and applied lithium grease to the stop/play, FF/RW gear contact points. I noticed that the motor was bigger than I expected and the drive belt was thicker than I thought it would be. The player is designed for many hours of operation. Update: I bought a second of these turntables and after opening it I found that the electrical tape on the circuit board had been replaced with heat shrink tubing on some units. This is clearly preferable. I have attached photos of two units; one with loose tape pressed against the motor/belt and a picture of a second turntable with shrink wrap on the same wiring harness. After this service, the tape recorder functions worked smoothly and quietly, and the tape played well at the correct speed. I also found that the small hole on the back of the platter is for a flat head jeweler's screwdriver to adjust the speed of the tape if needed. I knew at this price if I opened it I would void my warranty. I've been working on cassette decks for 40 years now and decided it was worth a try. I'm glad I did because it's actually a decent player. Cons: There is a very slight hum in the headphones when playing a cassette. It's only noticeable when the volume is turned down. I haven't tested the USB audio function since I bought it to use as a Walkman. A buzzing noise was present when the player was powered by a USB port or batteries.

Pros
  • Lots of positive vibes
Cons
  • No performance
