I bought this for my little grandkids as a "do it with grandma, mom or dad" set. We work together and it's been great. The boys' favorite plane is the space shuttle because they know it best, and they were fascinated by other flying machines as well, with the Wright brothers' plane being their second favorite plane. The pieces in the set are well made and a more mature child should be able to do it themselves, but you'll definitely need an adult to either put it together or help with it, depending on the child's ability. My grandchildren are young enough that, when rubber band "engines" don't work the way they'd like, they just carried the planes and made the noise of the engines. But when we got the rubber band motors to work, they squeaked with delight. I should add that both mom and dad were interested and dad took over the game with the planes and his sons which was great fun for everyone. There's not much history here, but it's a great stimulus for self-exploration for interested children.
