Doesn't work - at least not with this Thule hitch and carrier.
I tried the nuts on the bottom and then the nuts on the top. The curved edge points in the direction shown in all videos. I even brought my husband over to see if he could pull it harder than me (he did but it still didn't work). I have a 1.25" hitch/kickstand and the product description says it fits 1.25" and 2" wheels. I got it even though it was more expensive than most because I thought it would be better. It seems pretty solid but hasn't done the job yet.
