The red handle itself was attached to a threaded rod, causing the entire assembly to rotate as a unit. By clamping the rod with soft pliers I was able to remove the handle from the threaded rod. Then I lubricated the threaded rod and pulled and loosened the rod several times until it was loose enough to be used without binding. I'm not sure if this is a sign of quality control or an absolute defect with this product. Once repaired and working properly, I was able to install the new press-fit bottom bracket with no problem.
