Review on VisionTek VT4000 Dual 4K Laptop Monitor Docking Station, Dual UHD Video, HDMI, DisplayPort, USB 3.0, USB-C, RJ45 Ports, Mac & Windows Compatible (901005), Black by Shawn Price

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Better and cheaper than Targus DOCK160USZ

This is my second experience with a docking station. My standards are not particularly high. I have a 4K laptop and two old 1280x1024 monitors to give me some workspace. I have all ports 3.1, normal speed (5Gb) and USB-A and USB-C. I don't play games or do anything demanding - just lots of office work with lots of windows open. My first attempt (not the docking station I'm reviewing here): Targus DOCK160USZ, which I bought from a big real competitor for a bit more than I would pay for Revain. (I bought it there because I had credit to use up.) This device and VisionTek have similar specs: 2 external 4K monitors with a 60Hz refresh rate, 1GB ethernet, 3.0 USB, audio. Even with low demand, Targus would occasionally display block lines on external monitors. The worst was Ethernet, which only supported downloads at around 2Mbps, which is 1/500th of its rated speed - not enough to do anything online. After a lot of debugging I ruled out everything but the hub. I suspect that the device is defective - not the seller's fault of course. I've seen positive reviews for Targus. Second try: VisionTek VT4000. I disconnected all cables from Targus and connected them to VisionTek. After about 15 seconds of setting up the PnP port, everything worked. All. I installed the drivers from the CD that came with it, which also had good instructions in PDF files. (Targus just came with a tiny piece of paper with fine print and mostly generic characters telling me pretty obvious things. They didn't have to kill a branch to print that, to be honest.) I uploaded three videos to three monitors at a time like moving the mouse and dragging windows across the extended desktop. No stuttering, skipping or blocky artifacts. Again, I rarely use 4K monitors, so I don't expect any problems. Ethernet was the next test. I disconnected from the wifi I was using and started Ookla. The download was 120 Mbps and the upload was 10, which is really all I have available in my area. It definitely surpassed 100MB, so it ran successfully on the 1GB spec - and about 60x faster than Targus. Problem solved. Hooray! Targus returns to the store.
