Bought this camera exactly a year ago. I do a lot of amateur photography. I shoot everything from landscapes to astrophotography to extreme macro photography. You will be amazed how this camera works. The only thing I would like to change about this camera: 1. The position of the power button is such that you can accidentally turn off the camera when trying to take a picture. The new Canon SX50 fixes that.2. The camera does not record in RAW format. The new Canon SX50 fixes that.3. What annoys me the most is when the camera is in manual mode, sometimes the camera overrides my ISO settings. This will NOT be fixed by SX50. I briefly considered upgrading to the SX50, but when the camera is used at 35x zoom it can be difficult to hold the camera fairly still without a tripod, even with Canon's excellent image stabilization. The 50X will definitely need a tripod, which I don't want to lug around in the woods. My solution to the auto ISO and RAW mode issue was to download and use the unmodifiable CHDK firmware, a software hack that makes no changes to Canon's onboard programming. It is available online and can be downloaded for free. The camera is quite bulky as it houses a great Canon telephoto lens. The lens uses fluorite glass, an exotic glass with excellent chromatic correction. I don't usually use flash when taking photos and prefer natural light even at night. The CMOS chip is very sensitive and captures the finest details and natural colors even when shooting at night. I have never used the camera's preset scene modes and prefer to shoot in manual mode. I found CMOS to be so sensitive that I usually set the white balance to negative. Considering the huge telephoto lens, the camera is well balanced and lightweight, but well built. The lens moves smoothly when set to telephoto. The lens can be used in combination with 2.5x digital zoom, bringing the total number of telephoto lenses to 140x. As a purist, I turn off the digital zoom. As you increase ISO values, noise increases as you approach ISO 3200; The sensitivity of the CMOS is so high that I've never had to set the ISO to such a high value, even when shooting in the dark. The colors reproduced by the camera are very realistic; i usually only adjust my photos for light, not color. Possibilities of macro shooting of the camera โ from 0 cm; If you're doing macro photography up close, make sure the lens isn't touching the subject! The lens focuses to a distance of 0 cm. When capturing moving subjects (sports mode), it shoots at 2.5 frames per second, which is enough to capture most action. As the saying goes, a picture is worth a 1000 words so I have included images taken with the SX40. There is no magic here (other than the camera). I use Photoshop Elements to edit my images, but other than crop and lighting adjustments for highlights and shadows, these photos look like they were shot. The colors are the same as in the photos, NEVER corrected. In the year I owned the camera, I took almost 3,000 photos. Make sure you buy a high speed Class 10 card for this camera to get the most out of it. The camera supports Eye Fi cards, but I haven't tried this feature. My advice: if you want to take photos that look professional and compare to a really good DSLR, buy this camera or the new SX50!
