Would buy again, good for the camp kitchen

I must admit. I was a little hesitant to try this. I couldn't imagine how this meal couldn't be a horribly gooey mush, but I was very wrong. It would be a difficult recipe to get right, so kudos to Mountain House! It's not the most appetizing dish to look at straight out of the bag, but as they say, the taste and texture were surprisingly good. After rehydration, the bread slices were still firm and textured, a pleasant surprise. The sauce was a little sticky but maybe I needed a little more water. In any case, sausage sauce cooked under normal conditions has a slightly sticky texture, so this is nothing new. The sauce had a nice mild sausage flavor but wasn't overwhelming. I actually added more pepper to mine to make it spicier. Small pieces of sausage could be seen everywhere. The sausage was a bit chewy, but maybe a little more water or time would have helped. Agitation in the middle of the rehydration period is crucial for a good end result. Even with thorough mixing, there was a lot of dry material left in the beginning that couldn't be properly rehydrated unless I mixed it again halfway through. Grocery storage for emergencies or travel needs. I would buy again without hesitation!

Pros
  • FAST COOKING - Just put hot water in a bag and eat in under 10 minutes with no clean up. The pouch is shorter, wider and more bowl-shaped for a more comfortable eating experience. Eat straight from the bag and skip the dishes!
Cons
  • There are nuances
