Smart design details make these practical; "awesome " style makes them a hit with my 9-year-old

My family recently got stand-up paddleboards and a cheap youth kayak to play around with on the local bay. We've been having a great time but depending on where we're playing, we sometimes have to get in and out of the water at less-than-ideal locations.A couple of weekends ago, this meant clamoring—while carrying our boards and kayak—over a long stretch of big, occasionally slick rocks. We made it okay, but it did highlight that perhaps having our 9-year-olds go barefoot was not the best idea. That's when I went hunting for some water shoes/aqua socks/whatever-you-want-to-call-your-protective-aquatic-footwear.After looking at a bunch of options, I settled on these because 1) they're affordable (we're just goofing around and aren't interesting in "investing" at this point) but didn't look like they'd fall apart immediately, 2) they had good reviews, and 3) my son thought they looked "awesome."Now that we've had a chance to try them out, I'm a fan. The sizing info was a little ambiguous, so I did a little googling and determined that my son's big-kids-size-5 feet should fit reasonably well in the "5.5 B(M) US Women" size of these shoes. That turned out to be accurate—he says they feel "a little small" but I think he's feeling the snugness of the fabric rather than the length; there's a little front-to-back slack, which is what I was hoping for.The combination of the heel strap, the elastic laces, and the pinch-and-slide adjuster made it easy for my son to get the shoes on and off without help—something I was a little concerned about just because I know these are meant to fit tight. The soles have enough texture and grip that I'm confident he'll have no trouble climbing over anything our adventures throw at him.Construction quality seems good—it's hard to know for sure until we've used them for a few months at least, but based on my tugging and poking, I'm confident these will last well enough to see us to the next size up, and will probably get passed on to a lucky cousin. The final (quirky) recommendation: my son likes these so well (both in style and fit) that he wears them around the house just for fun. ;)

Pros
  • Easy to slip on and off
Cons
  • The shoes may cause blisters due to friction or moisture
