The upper of the shoe is covered with elastic foam or neoprene. While most shoes of this type have about 1/2 inch of stretch material on each side. Once you put them on they are quite comfortable but they are quite difficult to put on. The soles are also thin, I have a gravel driveway and you can feel every stone. Unfortunately this is not the replacement I was looking for and I would not buy them again.
