For about a hundred bucks, these speakers will absolutely smash like speakers from Bose and Logitech. While Yamaha aren't as popular when it comes to computer speakers, they are familiar with speakers in general and it's clear the engineering and design haven't sacrificed. Sound is very subjective, so I won't go into detail. in detail here. All I can say is that despite a small diaphragm in each cabinet (the top part is actually just for porting), the sound is quite detailed and doesn't suffer from artificial amplification. While a small cone can't penetrate very deeply, Yamaha doesn't play games like Bose, using huge ports and internal tubes to pump dirty bass out of small speakers. Instead, the sound naturally narrows while maintaining clarity in the mids and highs. If you want speakers that thump and let you "feel" the explosions, buy a 2.1 system. Some reviewers complained of distortion at higher volumes. Not sure what room they used them in or what the source was, but from a Lenovo laptop in an office/small bedroom they're loud enough. Maybe they don't have enough power for a large room (e.g. for use with a TV in a family room). It's only 7 watts per channel, so people have to manage their expectations. For near-field listening, so desktop/laptops, you'll find that even at half power, they're still pretty loud. I haven't had a chance to test dual input mixing. To be honest I'm not sure how this could be used - maybe if you had multiple mics and a live Q&A session? The build quality seems to be sufficient for this price. There are no crappy fabric speaker grilles, and the button + dial work smoothly. Again, I think the $100 design is at least as good as the competition. Not sure why the connecting cable between the speakers is rigid as it kind of limits flexibility/repair later, but most people probably won't care. I ended up returning them for something with bigger cones (read: more bass). However, if someone asked me to recommend a desktop/laptop speaker that wouldn't break the bank, I'd probably suggest them. Yamaha prioritizes clean and precise sound over artificial bass extension.
