My daughter has a lot of shoes (I have more but I won't go into that! haha!) and one of these stands that hangs on her door. When I first received the box I was shocked that the box was so heavy. Not crazy, I-can't-lift-it's heavy, but it's not junk either. I've had many shoe racks in my life (yes, I'm addicted to shoes!) and this is the BEST open rack I've ever seen. Those made of wood themselves take up too much space, those made of plastic break, and many made of metal are too flimsy. It's beautiful and durable. When you open it, each piece is wrapped in plastic and secured with straps to keep it from shifting or getting scratched in the box. It was just a nice upgrade for the packaging. The box itself was really glued together so I had to cut off the top to open it. That was the biggest task! It's articulated so the sides just fold out and you snap the shelves into place. You don't even need instructions (although they are included). The legs are bolted at the bottom and have a nice long shank so you can adjust the legs if needed. I ended up unscrewing mine almost completely to fit 4 more shoeboxes UNDER the bottom shelf. The shelves sometimes had to be knocked down to snap into place, but nothing too much. They have a foam insert in the clip that holds the shelf to the frame so they stay in place and some took a little nudge to get off. You don't have to line up all the shelves, you might want the distance between them to be higher, but we used them all. They are stackable and come with a small (metal!) beside. They also come with little plastic tips, so they don't have a hollow metal stem that just sticks out unless you stack them together. (The tips of the balls are shown in the product photo.) I prefer to keep good shoes in boxes. I know someone has complained that heels don't fit me, but I don't like leaving good shoes just to keep them from getting dusty, so we pack them in tissue boxes and sometimes dust bags that come with good shoes will. My daughter has her Uggs in a box on these shelves. I'm crazy, so most of the time I copy photos of shoes from the internet, print them on big labels and stick them on the outside of the boxes. Then I can visually scan and see which shoes are in which box! haha! Some good manufacturers put photos of the shoes right on the box, which is nice. However, you don't have to pack your shoes in boxes. Just put your shoes right on the shelf. My daughter has one of two shelf packs of boxes and the other has just opened. She actually has a clothes rack with a wire shelf underneath and we put it on top of that. The legs kept falling through the wire so we just took them off and tucked the shelf's legs into the wire to make it sit flat. I also like that there is a small rail on the top shelf in the back. Many shelves are simply flat on top. So if you put a box or a pair of shoes in it, you can easily slip them off your back and fall into the chasm behind the shelf. This one is also nice because it doesn't have a hard back so you can see and reach it if something falls behind it (even clothes on it or whatever). These are really very good shelves, much better than many shoe racks. I had (I like the one with all the squares too). Very well made and can be used for any shelving/storage needs.
