The number of fins and fin aspect ratio on this heatsink is impressive, especially for us old timers who remember the days when heatsinks with such a high surface area to volume ratio had to be made by embedding sheet metal fins in milled edges to make heatsinks more similar Size (2.581 inches wide instead of 2.71 inches, height 1.340 inches instead of 1.41 inches high) in the AAvid online catalog model #83220. The heatsink could be 10% better (lower). Note that if you purchased a length other than 3 inches, thermal resistance does not scale linearly with 1/length, assuming the heat source is centrally located. At the 15.75 inch length I'm using, the improvement is only 50%. in thermal resistance. Also note that thermal resistance decreases (improves) as the air moves. While the documentation I found for #83220 doesn't list thermal resistance versus airflow, I found another AAvid catalog and heatsink #72070 (which is 3.008 inches wide, 1.02 inches high, and similar aspect ratios, 1.4 oC / W / 3 in). Provide a table of thermal performance versus airflow; for moderate airflow (quiet muffin fan) 700 LFM, thermal resistance drops another 70% or so. The net result for the 15.75" version with a forced airflow of 700 LFM is expected to be approximately (1°C/W). /3 inches * 90% * 50% * 30%) = 0.14°C/W. My heat source is distributed over a 15.75 inch length and not a point source in the middle, so I would expect the actual performance to be 2-3 times better (lower resistance) than the calculation above. One final note: the fins on these heatsinks are thin and fairly prone to flexing, particularly the edge fins. They were well packaged in foam sheets in custom sized boxes and only one of the four I purchased had the fins straightened.
